Earning a Living Checking Grates

Apr 30, 2013 -- 10:34am

How many times have you seen someone combing a beach with a metal detector?  Well, there's a man in New York City doing the equivalent with subway grates.  He scans the grates every day to pick up what people drop in them and then he pawns them to make money.  He's been doing this for 8 years and uses dental floss and mousetrap glue to retrieve lost items.  He checks the grates between 23rd Street and 47th Street and makes about $150 a day.  He says he finds a lot of cash and iPhones.  The most expensive thing he's ever found is a diamond and gold bracelet he was able to pawn for $1800.  He also helps frantic people get their keys back if he sees someone struggling.  Have you ever dropped something in a grate?  If so, have you gotten it back?  Let me know here.
