When Laura and her family moved into a home with a backyard pool she and her husband took precautions. They wanted to make sure their kids were safe so they installed a safety fence, had beeps put on the doors going outside and, of course, drilled into their children never to go near the pool without an adult. But despite those efforts tragedy almost struck. Fortunately, there was a guardian angel nearby!

Laura had turned her back for just a moment when 2 year old Andie got around the safety measures and fell in the pool. Her older brother, 4 year old Gray, saw her struggling and jumped into the pool and was able to help her to the side. After they got out of the pool they walked up to Laura, both soaking wet, and Andie said, ‘I falled in the pool and he saved me!’

Laura immediately signed Andie up for Swim and Float classes that teach small children how to get to the side if they fall in water. Three weeks later Andie was able to swim to the side of the pool alone.

I remember when I was 7 years old, my family moved into a house with an in-ground pool in the back yard. My brother, sister and I were all able to swim but my mom didn’t know how to swim.  So she immediately enrolled in the local swim classes and really faced her fear and learned how to swim. She will tell you to this day that when we moved there she pledged that there would never be a time that, if we were in trouble, she couldn’t save us. My sister and I both went on to be lifeguards as we got older and taught swimming.

If you have a pool nearby or live near water, make sure you and your entire family know how to swim. You never know when it may save your life.
