(ONN) – A countywide ban on plastic bags has been approved by Cuyahoga County Council in Cleveland.

The ban – which was tweaked to give retailers extra time to prepare for the change – was approved in a 8-3 vote from council.

The ban will go into effect in January.

The ban is the second attempt by council since 2017 to curtail the use of plastic bags.

The measure could be pre-empted by a proposed bill in the Ohio House that would prevent Cuyahoga County and other local governments from banning or taxing plastic bags, resurrecting questions about home-rule powers in the Ohio Constitution.
