Troll (1986)

HARRY POTTER…(JR) is the star of this film. Yes, this film focuses on the Potter family, of which the dad and main character, his son, are both named Harry Potter. That’s just fun in itself. Troll is an underrated movie that brings an interesting fantasy angle to horror. The titular troll is a great piece of practical effects and is ugly. In a good way, of course.

If you are looking for something that is not overtly scary but still has creepy moments, or if you are looking for a little sillier version of a movie like Tom Cruise’s ‘Legend’, check out this 80’s gem.

Spoopy Fact: Two of the biggest names in the movie are a pre-‘Seinfeld’ Julia Louis-Dryfuss and the late Sonny Bono of Sonny and Cher fame

Night of The Living Dead (1968)

A masterpiece. One of the most widely recognized horror films of all-time, the original ‘Night’ is a must-watch for any Halloween season. The effects are definitely reminiscent of their time but the real star of this film is the story and the characters. It was groundbreaking while still being a passion project with a shoestring budget.

One of the biggest game-changing themes of the story is the fact that it had an African-American actor as the lead. Something that was a rarity in the late 1960’s. The film deals with race and class issues, oh, and ghouls. Definitely turn the lights out and ignore some of the campy practical effects for what is a great film, regardless of genre.

Spoopy Fact: The word ‘zombie’ is never used in this film. Also, due to an error in it’s copyright, the film lives in the public domain and can be used without fear of being sued.
