Scary Movie (2000)

This is the one that started the trend of genre-parody movies and the ‘from 5 of the 7 writers of…’ films. What made ‘Scary Movie’ so unique is that it was a simple, popcorn movie that knew it wasn’t going to be taken seriously. It also wasn’t a blatant cash grab like so many of it’s later era sequels and spin-offs. It’s fun and really immerses you into the turn-of-the-century pop culture zeitgeist.

Legend (1985)

This is not really a “Halloween” movie but I think it’s dark and intense themes really fit the season enough that you could consider it one of them. Tim Curry and Tom Cruise headline a stellar ensemble cast in this fantasy adventure that is a mix of Lord of The Rings and Legend of Zelda. It also features some incredible creations from the Jim Henson creature shop. Yes, it’s a bit romantic and it has unicorns but Curry’s portrayal of Darkness is a delight.
