I saw this and was horrified. I had to talk about this. This fashion brand, which I’m not going to mention, unveiled a line of hoodies during New York fashion week that feature the names and logos of the schools who have had mass shootings. They have Sandy Hook, Columbine, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Now, some say it’s a tribute to those schools and brings awareness. But they didn’t stop at just featuring the names and logos of the schools. The hoodies look like they have holes that were made by bullets. As you can imagine, family members of the victims from those shootings are speaking out and I wholeheartedly am behind them. A student who survived the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting wrote ‘My dead classmates dying should not be a f***ing fashion statement’. One family member who lost a child in the Sandy Hook shooting said, ‘What you are doing here is absolutely disgusting, hurtful, wrong and disrespectful. Our pain is not to be used for your fashion’. I couldn’t have said it better. Whoever in this company thought this was a good idea seriously needs to take a look in the mirror and have a discussion with themselves over their sense of appropriateness and taste. They should have to go to those communities featured and talk with the family members left behind and hear their pain. And don’t hide behind the, ‘well, we’re bringing awareness’. No, that wasn’t why you did this. You wanted publicity and money, and we all know it.
