Referee Gets Hit in Head by Cannon Blast-Don’t Worry He’ll be OK

A fan of the Maine Maritime Academy football team brought his own cannon to the game against Massachusetts Maritime Academy. There is a tradition where a cannon is fired after every touchdown. The cannon didn’t have a cannon ball but it did have black powder and a substance that he had made into a wad. The wad is what hit the ref in the head. The man immediately fell to the ground. He was taken to a local hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

My question is HOW did this guy get a cannon into the area of the football field if he’s just a fan and not officially with either team??? As many things as you can’t bring to a game anymore you would think the cannon would be turned away!
