You’ve likely heard some headline shouting that your addiction to your smartphone is ruining your life in some way. But is that really the case?

According to new research, those previous studies that link time spent on the device to psychological well-being might be flawed. Comparing self-reports with an app that actually measures screen time, the researchers from the universities of Lancaster and Bath found that the data didn’t match. “There’s a huge discrepancy between what people think they do and what they actually do,” says study author Brittany Davidson.
