Girl is an absolute anthem for self-determination! The song rides on a deliberate tempo with a guitar hook that follows suit as if to mimic the introspection that comes with self realization. There is space in the song that clears the mind but a focus in her vocal performance stating “everything’s going to be okay.” It’s the song that helps you self sooth when you’re feeling low about yourself. Maren has stated in interviews that the song stemmed from a small confrontation she had with a fellow musician. When she started writing the song about the other musician, she came to find that the song was about herself. She was not happy with the person she was being, so this song was as a means to work on herself to become the person she wants to be. It also stands as an anthem for female empowerment acknowledging all the efforts that women put in daily and the struggles women go through. There’s a lot of ways to interpret the song, but at the core of it is a song to pick yourself back up when you need it!
