Shaun of The Dead (2004)

Easily one of my favorite movies of all time, despite genre. I love zombies and this is such a fun, unique take on the genre before it really exploded into the mainstream. The cool part is, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright wrote a movie that takes zombies seriously and doesn’t either poke fun of them being brainless OR make them hyper aggressive and undead terrors. It’s got a cast of well crafted characters and even throws in a bit of sharp social commentary.

But don’t worry, it’s not all laughs and love story. There is a great amount of gore for those who appreciate a bloody horror-comedy!

Saw (2004)

Cary Elwes will always be known to me for two roles (NOT Princess Bride). Robin Hood from ‘Men in Tights’ and his turn in the original Saw film. Before the universe of Jigsaw got out of control, this film was really a dark horse that showed out. A great premise that really left you wondering, just how far would you go to stay alive? How much pain would you be willing to endure to survive? How much were you willing to hurt someone else to save yourself?

A brutal climax that is not for the squeamish is the cherry on top of this gem.
