“Old Town Road” Breaks Billboard Record

What started off as a meme and mainstay on the app TikTok has solidified its place in history! Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” is now the longest running No.1 in Billboard Hot 100 history. The song has spent 17 weeks at the No.1 spot. “Old Town Road” has surpassed many iconic songs including Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day” featuring Boyz II Men.

Lil Nas X wrote the song after just getting kicked out of his sisters home, where he used his pending homelessness as a motivator to plan the hit song. He’s jokingly stated that he saw himself as a loner cowboy while writing the song. The game “Red Dead Redemption 2” was also cited as initial inspiration for the song. While he was banking off of meme culture to propel the hit forward, he had no idea it would reach this status.
